Keep reading to learn my story...
In
late 2006 my husband and I were matched with two children to adopt from
the foster care system. We knew they were considered "hard to
place" because of their severe behaviors but we read every resource we
could get our hands on and we thought we were reasonably ready.
Unfortunately, everything we read and learned came from
sources
that were having a relatively low success rate with kids like ours.
Over
the course of the transition, the kids were violent with us often.
We didn't have much of a honeymoon period with them and it
started to sink in just how difficult this was going to be.
We
began searching for new techniques, something that wouldn't just
control their behavior-- something that would help them heal.
A
few months into the transition (which was way too long--but that's
another story...) we went to a training on a treacherous day in
February. I'm so thankful we didn't turn the van around
because
of the weather. At that training we heard new information
that
taught us how to parent without depending on punishment.
(Which
had worked with our biological son, but was a waste of time when it
came to our new son and daughter, then 5 and 6.) Julie Alvarado was a representative of the Post Institute at the time
and had
been working with kids using Bryan Post's strategies with great success. We latched onto these dynamic
solutions that offered us the hope we'd been looking for.
We learned the science behind what happens to a child's brain when he
is abused or neglected. We
learned how even a traumatic
birth can cause damage to vital parts of
the brain that later govern our relationships and ability to attach.
We also learned that
there was hope.The
brain could heal
from such damage under the right circumstances.
Scientists
who had been studying the affects of trauma on the brain had discovered
that just six months in the home of understanding adoptive or foster
parents, could start the brain toward healing in the areas that had
been damaged. We were desperate to learn more--and after that
day
we were dedicated to learning everything we could about this type of
parenting that was shared with us by the Post Institute for Family
Centered Therapy.
We had one biological son and though he had
been excited about getting siblings, he was frustrated at being the
target of so much anger and jealousy. As we explained to him
our
new plan, he began to approach his siblings differently and once they
moved home permanently, and we had gotten better at changing our
parening
paradigm, our kids began to improve noticably.
What does this have
to do with homeschooling?
From
the beginning we planned to homeschool because we already homeschooled
our oldest son but during the transition to adoption the oldest of our
soon to be adopted children had to attend school. Honestly,
the
house was much quieter when he wasn't there and I had second thoughts
about bringing him home. I knew however, that no matter what
the
school did, a school
could not offer him the love and understanding of a
mother.
As
the school year progressed , we were constantly being
called into the principal's office and I knew I had no choice--I was
going to have to bring him home before
his spirit was crushed and his
self-esteem became too damaged to recover. The
school he was
attending was incredibly helpful and the staff was following our advice
(which caused things to improve dramatically). In spite of
all
this, though his teacher was
one of the most loving women I've ever known, and one of the most
competent teachers, even she
agreed he needed me
more than anyone else.
Though
I myself was a teacher, and though I was
philisophically invested in the homeschooling idea, I was scared to
death. Even with our new paradigm I knew
teaching my son at home
was going to be challenging. In addition, no one else we knew
personally was attempting to home educate a child like ours the way we
were doing it. Even our friends who had adopted and were
homeschooling used consequences based parenting, which we could see
wasn't working with our kids.
You're still
reading because you
have a child like mine. You have been there with him every
step
of the way but he still struggles to get along at school. The
kids tease him and the teachers run the other way when he walks into
the building.
In addition to this, maybe, like me, you have
another child who also struggles--having tantrums one minute and
clinging to you the next. You know your kids would benefit
with
more time with you--especially if they have attachment issues--but you
are too afraid to tackle teaching them at home.
You may even be
a seasoned home educator who thought homeschooling your traumatized or
adopted kids would be just like schooling your bio kids.
Unfortunately,
what worked with your biological kids misses the
mark with your adopted kids, who are defiant and mouthy with
you
all day--maybe even violent at times.
The violence in
your home may be bad enough that you feel you have no choice but to
send your child to school. Like us, you may be suffering from
Post Traumatice Stress Disorder because of living with a child who so
frequently verbally and physically assaults you.
What if there were hope?
What
if you could look into the future and see a home school where your
child
was thriving, learning, and had attached to you and your family members?
What if your home
school could actually be the big tool in your attachment toolbox that
leads your child to love and be loved?
We have learned that adoptive parents and parents of kids with
behavioral issues who attempt to homeschool often give up because the
issues they face in addition to teaching are so overwhelming it causes
them to throw in the towel.
Fortunately,
there is
hope. I have now been home teaching my adopted children
for over two years and in that time, we have learned parenting and
teaching
techniques that have turned our home into a place of learning, loving,
and bonding. Even our "hard case" has become a good student
and
we have gone from 5+ tantrums per day to going weeks and weeks with no
major issues at all.
That
is why I started the Parent to Parent Resource Club. My goal
is
to help parents like you, who are attempting to home teach
kids who are considered the "toughest cases", the kids most public
schools hold out little hope for...
"Thanks for all your
encouragement. God was really speaking through you to me. I
was extremely blessed & am really looking forward to bringing
my girl back home. I can't wait to try this. Your
suggestions were so logical & appropriate. (I might
have thought of them myself, if I didn't have stress-induced confused
thinking!) But your knowledge of homeschooling shows you have done a
lot of research & learning, & what a gift to want to
share with others."

What
is the Parent to Parent Resource Club?
1.
A community
for parents to gather to encourage and help one another in their home
teaching
journey
2. A place to
hear from experts
in the homeschooling world who have "been there, done that"
before and are willing to lend
their
advice
3. A training
ground for parents who are striving to connect with
children who, for whatever
reason, are resistant to typical parenting and
teaching techniques
4. A "virtual
toolbox" , linking users to the resources they need to
home educate children with
trauma histories,
attachment issues, or
behavioral challenges
Who
could use the Parent to Parent Resource Club?
* Parents considering
starting a homeschool to reach and connect with their adopted children
* Parents who are seasoned
home educators struggling with attachment challenged kids
* Parents of biological
children who struggle with behavioral issues at school or at home
*
Parents who are new to homeschooling and are thinking of
quitting
because they have too many questions
that aren't getting answered
I enjoyed talking with you
too and I certainly am encouraged.
Thank you so much for your help and your time. One thing that
helps me
so much is learning that I don't have to teach [my nephew] 5th grade
work
when he is not emotionally able to do it; I felt so frustrated feeling
that I HAD to keep him up with the school's agenda. Being
able to let
go of that is so liberating!

The
bottom line is, I have a passion for helping families bring their
adopted kids home from public school in order to ensure that the
attachment these kids so desperately need happens. So many
adoptees grow up to realize they never really felt like a part of the
family and with 35 hours of the week taken up with school,
another 5-15 hours with homework, and activities on top of all that,
parents are left
with almost no time to bond with their adopted kids!
Homeschooling
solves
the big issue of not enough time
but many parents feel alone and ill-equipped to tackle home educating
their attachment challenged children. They understand the
opportunity is there to create attachment by increasing the time spent
with adopted kids but they are afraid to do it by themselves.
This
is why I created the
Parent to Parent Resource Club.
Here's what you get with your membership:
On the site: 1. Exclusive access to a forum of parents who are also homeschooling adopted children 2.

advice has given me hope mixed with a reality that has helped make my
path clear. She has helped me overcome my tendency to think
with
my emotions in the moment and see the long term benefits of building my
relationship with my daughter first
and finding creative ways to pursue
acedemics.
